PRETORIA – South Africa has welcomed the agreement of a ceasefire between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The truce follows talks between DRC and Rwanda, mediated by Angola.
Last week President Cyril Ramaphosa undertook a working visit to Luanda. There Ramaphosa and his counterpart, President João Lourenço, committed to continue working alongside other leaders to ensure that the ceasefire becomes permanent.

The United Nations estimates that fighting in North Kivu province between the DRC and rebels backed by Rwanda has displaced more than 1.7 million people.
Dirco spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri, says South Africa will continue to be part of efforts to bring peace in the Great Lakes region.
